A new case of the novel coronavirus, officially known as Covid-19, has been detected in Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon. Interestingly, the new virus case was diagnosed in a 58-year-old French national. The patient arrived in Yaounde, the country’s capital, from an unnamed destination on February 24, 2020.
Cameroon is now the fourth country in sub-Saharan Africa to be affected by the global outbreak.
In the announcement, the health ministry revealed that the virus was detected in a 58-year-old French citizen. Also, the patient has since been quarantined in the city’s Central Hospital. Furthermore, the ministry assured Cameroonians that all measures have been taken by the government to contain this new case and potential risks of the virus spreading.
Other African countries with confirmed cases include Nigeria, Senegal, Egypt and Algeria. The WHO declared the outbreak of coronavirus in China a global health emergency on Jan. 30.
The health official urged the public to be “vigilant and respect hygiene rules.” The World Health Organization (WHO) also confirmed the case in a tweet. COVID-19 emerged in China’s central Wuhan city last December and has now spread to over 80 countries.
The global death toll is almost 3,300, with more than 95,200 confirmed cases, according to the WHO. Notably, some 52,000 patients who contracted the virus recovered.
