A newly released report has unveiled the details of a long-standing program by Danish health officials that forced contraception on hundreds of Greenlandic women and girls without their consent. The report, which includes testimonies from over 350 women, documents nearly 500 incidents and sheds light on a dark chapter of colonial history. The campaign, which was active from the 1960s to the 1980s, involved the forced insertion of intrauterine devices (IUDs) and impacted nearly half of Greenland’s childbearing population at the time. This revelation has prompted a new wave of discussion on a global scale about government-sanctioned sterilization and reproductive rights.
