Ignorance vs Power: How Poor Voter Literacy Weakens Democracy

As Nigeria prepares for upcoming elections, voter literacy remains a pressing challenge with far-reaching consequences for democratic governance. While millions are registered to vote, many citizens lack the civic knowledge necessary to make informed choices, leaving them vulnerable to manipulation through disinformation, inducements, or outright vote-buying.

This deficit in voter education undermines the very foundation of democracy. An electorate that does not fully understand its rights or the responsibilities of governance is less likely to demand accountability, thereby entrenching weak institutions and ineffective leadership. Civic education, too often treated as an afterthought, must become a sustained, year-round priority rather than a last-minute campaign exercise.

Building an informed electorate requires more than urging citizens to collect their voter cards it demands deliberate investment in education, transparency, and nationwide engagement. Ultimately, democracy thrives not merely on ballots cast, but on the knowledge and awareness that guide them.
