Nigeria Decides 2019: How Binta Garba Northern Nigeria’s Only Female Senator Loses Seat

Binta Masi Garba, age 52, served the Federal House of Representative three times, from 1999 to 2011. She is the only female delegate from Adamawa State to the National Assembly and also the first politician to represent two different Federal constituencies.

Binta Garba was a first-time senator and Northern Nigeria’s only female senator. Binta lost the Adamawa North Senatorial election to Ishakku Abbo of the Peoples Democratic Party. Ishakku Abbo, who is 41, supported APC in 2015 and defected to the People’s Democratic Party in 2018. Abbo joined politics in 2014.
