Politics In Nigeria: Who Is Binta Garba? Why Was She Offered Over 500 Million Naira By PDP Leaders?

Binta Garba is a Nigerian politician serving as the Senator of Adamawa North Senatorial District of Adamawa State since 2015. She served as Chairperson, Adamawa State chapter of All Progressive Congress and she is the first female State Chairperson of a registered major political party in Nigeria. Binta has also served the Federal House of Representatives three times, from 1999 to 2011.

In September 2018, Binta while speaking ahead of the APC primary, urging party members to re-elect President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Jibrilla Bindow and herself again, said the Peoples Democratic Party, during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, approached her, as the then Chairman of the Adamawa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, to dump the APC. According to her, she was offered the money so that Governor Jibrilla Bindow, the then-candidate of the APC, would not scale through.

In her words, “When I was chairman of the APC in the state, the PDP approached me to ditch the party and the candidate of the party then -Bindow, who later became governor. They said Bindow would not go anywhere and that I should leave the APC and work for the PDP and offered me not N100m, not N200m nor even N300m but far more than that. But I rejected the money and the offer and I told them that if I could not be bought during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, so I did not see how anybody would buy my conscience.”

She also added that the perception of her as a strong woman by the founding members of the APC in Adamawa State played a key role in her emergence as the first female chairman of a major political party and as a result, she will remain true to the confidence reposed in her by not betraying the stakeholders and members of the party.

Could this be another tactic to present the APC and the Buhari-led government as anti-corruption and endearing them to the hearts of Nigerians once again as the 2019 elections emerge?
