Today on Perspectives Show on Arise TV, we would be discussing Social media – the good, the bad and the ugly!
Yes indeed there are over 4 billion active social media accounts with the industry’s cumulative advertising revenue exceeding 50 billion dollars annually. There are also over 1 million books and over 500 million articles written about social media. Majority of social media’s active users pick up their phones over 50 times every day – social media is addictive! But first, the usefulness of social media cannot be undermined easily.
Many great causes were funded through social media. Many of today’s global movements were propelled by social media. Many emergencies were rescued and lives saved through social media. Many lives indeed have been changed with the rise of various digital platforms. With everything in life that has some benefits, there are also side effects, especially with overconsumption. Excessive usage of social media brings on health issues, social challenges and complex societal issues related to authenticity, jealousy and toxic digital drama.
According to a Korean study of over 50,000 young adults – psychiatric conditions, sleep disturbances and musculoskeletal problems are all linked to smartphones and social media usage of over 4 hours daily. In addition to health downsides, social media has also been linked to significant financial losses. Many networking apps have been classified as goldmines for scammers. Over 100,000 people globally report losing a total value of approximately 800 million dollars annually to scams that were initiated via social media.
It is advisable to limit social media usage to your ideal or most minimal necessity. The key to a better world today is intentional humanity. Our world needs a much stronger dosage of healthy decisions and bold resolutions. My name is Olatorera Majekodunmi-Oniru and I love all things Greater Humanity. Thank you for watching Perspectives. Have a great weekend and see you all very soon. Goodbye.
