UN: Conflict and Aid Cuts Driving Setback in Women’s Rights

Global progress on women’s rights is stalling, with some hard-won gains reversing, the UN has warned. A new report finds that one in four countries faced backlash in 2024, as conflicts, shrinking aid, and rising anti-equality movements erode protections. Over 600 million women now live near conflict zones, while 351 million are projected to remain in extreme poverty by 2030. Aid cuts threaten women’s organisations, with nearly half at risk of closure. UN officials urged urgent funding, stronger protectionsGlobal Development, and women’s inclusion in peacebuilding to prevent further regression in equality and rights.
