US Surgeon General Issues Advisory On Loneliness And Isolation as Japan’s Government Combats Loneliness With Multi-Pronged Strategy

The United States Surgeon General has issued a public health advisory, declaring loneliness and isolation a significant crisis affecting the nation. The advisory highlights the detrimental effects of social isolation on both mental and physical health, stating that the health risks are comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. This unprecedented move underscores a growing recognition by governments worldwide that loneliness is not merely a social issue but a public health emergency. The Japanese government is simultaneously undertaking a comprehensive strategy to combat what it has recognized as a national crisis of loneliness and social isolation. This effort includes the appointment of a Minister for Loneliness, the establishment of the Office for Measures to Combat Loneliness and Isolation, and the creation of a national Public-Private Coordination Platform with over 600 member organizations. These measures are designed to combat the rising rates of social withdrawal and suicide, particularly among younger people and women, which have been exacerbated by the pandemic. The government is also promoting local initiatives, such as community cafes and volunteer networks, and establishing a consultation call center to connect individuals with needed support services.
