Who Is Zenu Jose Filomeno Dos Santos? Why Was He Arrested For A $500 Million Financial Fraud?
Jose Filomeno Dos Santos, also known by close associates as Zenu, is son of the former president of Angola, Jose Eduardo Dos Santos. Current president of Angola, President Joao Lourenco, has been tackling corruption and in 2018, he facilitated the arrest of Jose Filomeno Dos Santos for illegally transferring $500 Million of the nation’s money to a Swiss bank before his father’s presidential term ended. He also illegally made his close associate, Swiss-based Jean Clause De Morais, as asset manager of the nations $5 Billion Oil Wealth Investment Fund; of which Jean Claude De Morais once said Jose Filomeno was “too dumb” to manage or know what to do with the fund presented to him by his father, then president of Angola.
In a public email distributed by the Angola State Prosecutors office, it was noted that “The evidence gathered resulted in sufficient indications that the defendant [has] been involved in practices of various crimes including criminal associations, receipt of undue advantage, corruption, participation in unlawful business, money laundering, embezzlement, fraud, among others.” Jose Filomeno Dos Santos is facing significant loss of wealth and time in prison.
Jose Filomeno Dos Santo’s father’s reign as president of Angola was one of the most corrupt eras in Angola’s history bringing Angola up the ranks of most corrupt countries in the world.
