Who Is Julius Maada Bio? How Has He Remained Powerful In Sierra Leone Since 1992?

Julius Maada Bio is the fifth and incumbent president of Sierra Leone. He was also the military Head of State of Sierra Leone from January 16, 1996, to March 29, 1996, under the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC). As the military head of state, he promised to restore the democratic civilian government which he did when he handed over power to Ahmad Tejan Kabbah in the country’s 1996 presidential election. As Sierra Leone’s current civilian president elected in March 2018, Julius Bio made history in the country as the first president who introduced free primary and secondary education in all public schools in the first month of his administration, also eliminating application fees in all government-owned universities across Sierra Leone.

Julius Bio has remained powerful in the Sierra Leonian government since he joined the military coup in 1992 which ousted president Joseph Saidu Momohs and formed the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC), till his own led coup in 1996 which made him the military head of state. Despite his retreat to the United States after he handed over power to the civilian government, claiming asylum and furthering his education in the States, Julis Bio returned to once again emerge as Sierra Leone’s president and head of state making him the most powerful man in the country today.
