Who Is Justice Rita Ofili Ajumogobia? Why Is A Judge Being Charged For Felonious Financial Crimes?

Justice Rita Ofili Ajumogobia was a Federal High Court Judge of Nigeria, based in Lagos State. Ofili Ajumogobia has a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from Obafemi Awolowo University and a Masters in Law from The University of Jos in Plateau State. Justice Ofili Ajumogobia was a Principal Partner at Ofili & Ajumogobia Law Firm for 10 years. Ofili & Ajumogobia was co-owned by her and her father. In 2004, she was officially made a High Court Judge of Nigeria. In hierarchy of High Court Judges, Justice Rita Ofili Ajumogobia attained a rank of top 3 in Lagos State and Top 15 Nationwide before she was fired (more details below). 

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of Nigeria received a petition in 2017 that implicated Ofili Ajumogobia of Bribery and other financial crimes. She has been under prosecution since then. In 2018, Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia was officially disqualified and fired as a Judge. She is accused of receiving bribes in excess of $800,000 through the course of her career. Rita Ofili Ajumogobia’s 2 children, Tochukwu Ajumogobia and Aribim Ajumogobia, were listed as Directors of the companies she used to collect bribes. One particular case remains under court proceedings. Ofili Ajumogobia is accused of receiving 5 Million Naira from an accused person, Godwin Obla, in her court. At a court hearing in December 2018, she slumped and was rushed to the hospital.
