Who Was laurent Kabila? Why Did One Of His Bodyguards Assassinate Him?

Laurent-Désiré Kabila was the third president of the Democratic Republic of Congo who overthrew Congolese dictator Mobutu Sese Seko and ruled as the country’s head of state from 1997 till his assassination on the 16th of January 2006. Although Laurent Kabila was seen as a revolutionary leader who helped to oust Mobutu Sese Seko, his Marxist style of government was characterized by authoritarianism, corruption, and human rights abuses and he was regarded as just ‘another Mobutu’.

Laurent Kabila was shot and killed in his residence by his bodyguard, Rashidi Muzele, who was also killed while attempting to flee the scene of the crime. It was revealed that Laurent Kabila’s assassination was masterminded by the Rwandan government, whose alliance he once had but later lost, including that of Uganda. The conspiracy theory over Laurent Kabila’s death also revealed that a Lebanese diamond dealer allegedly organized the logistics of the assassination. Investigations into his assassination led to the trial of about 135 people including 4 children before a special military tribunal. Laurent Kabila’s cousin Colonel Eddy Kapend who was alleged to have been the ringleader of his assassination was sentenced to death among 25 others but no execution was ever carried out.
