On Tuesday 26 2019, the citizens of Algeria took the streets to protest against President Bouteflika re-election bid, calling him unfit to rule. The ailing 82 years old wheelchair-bound President Abdulaziz Bouteflika, who has ruled Algeria for four terms (20 years), declared his intention to run for the fifth term in office in April. This announcement sparked a mass protest, the citizens wanted a change in the much-decried system that has kept him there and has a stranglehold on the power structure.

On Monday 11 2019, President Abdulaziz Bouteflika announced that he will not be seeking a fifth term in office, postponing the April 18 elections. Shortly after the announcement, hundreds of Algerians have been celebrating President Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s decision not to seek a fifth term in office. The decisions announced yesterday are a partial victory for the people’s movement. However, he still intends to hang on at least until a successor is chosen, in an election that so far has not been scheduled. The greed for power is intoxicating and reflects among most African Leaders.
