A report by Moody’s in 2018 studied 11 African countries and listed countries with the highest non-performing bank loans. Many of these loans are government-related or were government-backed through contractors. According to the Moody’s report, “Government arrears remain high, hurting the loan repayment capacity of contractors and sub-contractors of government projects. Risks are compounded by the fact that-in some cases -problematic direct and indirect exposures to the government are not classified as non-performing.” Top 5 African countries with excessive non-performing bank loans:
