Since President Buhari assumed office in May 2015, Nigeria’s economy has gone through a continuous downward spiral, hitting a major recession that caused the loss of thousands of lives in the country. Starting from the rise in dollar rate to inflation, to the continuous herdsmen attacks and Boko Haram killings, many have lost their loved ones to the economic hardship and cruelty while many still continue to suffer undue hardship due to the increase in living expenses. This begs to wonder what the situation of the country will be after the much anticipated 2019 Elections. Although records and statistics have been used to show that the nation is gradually pulling out of the recession, many still continue to fall victim to violence and chaos created by the prolonged economic recession. Here are 5 tragic deaths among the record of many, that have occurred during the recession:
- The tanker explosion on Otedola bridge on the 28th of June 2018, which claimed the lives of many victims.
- The herdmen attack in early 2018 which led to the killing of over 50 people in Benue state
- The kidnapping and death of Mr. Hosea Ibi, a member representing Takum 1 constituency in Taraba House of Assembly, on the 30th of December 2017.
- The killing of Kaduna traditional ruler Mr. Gambo Makama and his wife who were shot dead by gunmen, leaving their son injured and orphaned.
- The death of about 14 people which was caused by the suicide bombing of a suspected Boko Haram militant in Borno state in early 2018.
