In a shocking turn of events, the Supreme Court through a seven-man panel led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Mohammad, declared Hope Uzodinma of the APC as the governor-elect of Imo state. The election held in March 2019 saw Uzodinma come in fourth place with a total of 96, 458 votes as opposed to Emeka Ihedioha’s count of 273,404 votes.

The unanimous judgement of the panel read by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun agreed that results from 388 polling units were wrongfully excluded during the final collation of the gubernatorial elections result in Imo state. She added that with the addition of the results from the 338 omitted polling units, APC’s Hope Uzodinma garnered a majority of the polls, making him the rightful winner of the 2019 election.

Although details of the new votes and total from the addition of the omitted polling units were not provided, Justice Kudirat ordered for the immediate withdrawal of the certificate of return presented to Ihedioha and a new certificate of return to be issued to the new governor-elect.
