A Historic Day For Zimbabwe As It Holds Its First Presidential Election After 37 Years of Robert Mugabe

Robert Mugabe went down in history as one of the worst presidents of any African country. The failed dictator, Robert Mugabe, ran his country backwords for over 37 years. 2018 was a year to celebrate for Zimbabwe as Robert Mugabe was finally ousted as president of the country. Zimbabweans cast their ballots in excitement as the country recorded its first election since authoritarian leader Robert Mugabe was thrown out by the military in November 2017, with rising tension over fraud and the likelihood of a disputed result threatening voting day. 75 year old President Emmerson Mnangagwa, former ally of Robert Mugabe in the ruling ZANU-PF party, who was ushered in to power by the military. The new president  has promised a fresh start for the country despite being from the ZANU-PF elite party. Emmerson Mnangagwa has the advantage of covert military support, a loyal state media and a ruling party that controls government resources. His opposition in the historic vote for the southern African nation is 40 year old Nelson Chamisa of the MDC (Movement for Democratic Change), who has performed strongly on the campaign trail, aiming to harness votes for change from the young population.

The 94-year-old former president, Robert Mugabe, surprisingly interceded on the eve of the election, calling for voters to throw ZANU-PF out of office. The world was astonished last year when Zimbabwe generals seized control and ushered Mnangagwa to power after Robert Mugabe allegedly tried to position his wife Grace as his successor.
