Africa and The World of Football
Africa is a continent that houses 1 billion+ people that are passionate about the game of football and this can be verified looking at the streets of the continent especially during weekends when you can spot hundreds of kids play the amazing and passionate game of football in parks, on street corners and under bridges. Despite the love and passion for football, the continent doesn’t have anything to show regarding accolades in this area because of some of the problems the continent faces limiting development of expertise amongst passionate players of the sport. Let’s discuss some of the problems:
- The African state institutions don’t do much in promoting this game and giving it the required attention needed in order to see it progress, and this has in turn crippled the continent’s chances in showing who we are in the global domain. Pure example of this can be attributed to the ongoing World Cup that is taking place in Russia; this is the worst World Cup outing for Africa since 1984 because all the five African representatives where sent parking in the first round of the competition and this is a clear sign of under development in the sports sector.
- African states need to invest in this sport to get the best out of it. Looking at the lucrative revenue the game can bring to the African continent, we hope our state actors will look at how USA and China now invest in this game, and their nation leagues became attractive to big names in the game.
The game of football has massive potentials for the continent’s branding, visibility, passion and revenue-generating capabilities. Africa must invest in this sport that hundreds of thousands of her citizens love so much.
