Africa’s Best: Sahle-Work Zewde Becomes Ethiopia’s First Female President Following Mulatu Teshome’s Resignation

Sahle Work Zewde has been confirmed by Ethiopia’s parliament as the first female president of the country. Prior to her recent unprecedented celebratory appointment, Sahle-Work Zewde was the United Nations (UN) Ambassador to the African Union (AU). In Ethiopia, the Prime Minister is the country head and the president plays a support role to the Prime Minister.

Many African countries are increasing the populace of women leadership. Rwanda boasts of over 50% women in leadership positions in Government. The Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, also recently approved appointments of over 50%  women leaders in his cabinet. Sahle’s appointment seems very promising given her diplomatic experience with the UN and her goals to ensure peace and growth in Ethiopia.
