Travis Runnels was 21 years old when he committed his first crime of 2nd degree burglary. He became a registered felon and was put on probation. Less than a month later, he committed another felony burglary crime for which he was sentenced to 5 years in jail. Travis Runnels served only a few years and was released. By age 25, Travis runnels became an armed robber. Travis Runnels was convicted of aggravated robbery in Dallas, Texas, USA in 1997. For this crime, he was sentenced to 70 years in prison at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. While in prison, Travis Runnels became a murderer at age 31. He slaughtered the throat of his then supervisor, Stanley Wiley, killing the man instantly. For this crime, Travis Runnels has been on death row.
Sentenced to 70 years in prison drove Travis Runnels even more manic. It is highly possible Travis Runnels would have continued committing crimes if sentenced to lesser years and was re-released to the public. After all, after serving a few years for his first 2 crimes, it took him less than 2 additional years to evolve into an aggravated burglar with murder intentions given the firearm he carried. A lesser sentence, focused on criminal reform and psychosis, may have saved Travis Runnels and stopped him from the eventual unfortunate murder of Stanley Wiley.
