First Coronavirus Death in Nigeria: Who Was Suleiman Achimugu?

Suleiman Achimugu was a former Managing Director of Petroleum Pricing Monitoring Corporation, PPMC. Achimugu joined the NNPC in 1978 as Chemical Engineer II and later in 1999 after traversing the oil sector. He was deployed to NNPC Corporate Headquarters as General Manager, Turn Around Maintenance and Projects in the Refining and Petrochemicals Directorate. In November 2003, Achimugu was appointed Managing Director of Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC) and in 2007, he was appointed the Group General Manager of Renewable Energy Division of the NNPC.

Sadly, Suleiman Achimugu has died of Coronavirus as confirmed by Nigeria’s National Centre for Disease Control. The 67-year-old Achimugu contacted the virus on returning home following medical treatment in the UK. According to the NCDC, the deceased also had underlying medical conditions. He had multiple myeloma & diabetes and was undergoing chemotherapy.

He started showing symptoms of the virus last Tuesday. His family revealed that officials of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control were informed of his situation. The officials even took his blood sample for testing but they never got back to his family until he died overnight. He eventually died around 2:00 am on Monday after coughing severely for the most part of Sunday.
