The Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, owned by ex-president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and located in Abeokuta, Ogun State, is a historic, tourist and academic centre established as a national archive for the preservation of documents and materials used by the president during his tenure as the president of Nigeria. The building accommodates some presidential artefacts such as Obasanjo’s first car, a well-kept Volkswagen Beetle, an official jeep, helicopter, a miniature warship and a Nissan patrol jeep that conveyed him and his late wife, Stella Obasanjo to the State Security Service (SSS) office when he was implicated in the phantom coup of 1995 and also brought him back after three years, three months and three days in prison.
During the commissioning of the library and Obasanjo’s 80th birthday in 2017, the ex-president said his idea to build the library was borne out how much vital materials that should have been preserved from the civil war and from the period of military government were allowed to waste carelessly. The Library was set up to see what could still be salvaged and preserved.
The library stretches across 32 hectares of land and is made up of a number of buildings and facilities including the main library building, an amphitheatre, auditoriums, a bookshop, an amusement park, a wildlife park, a bamboo grove and a guest house among others. The Library itself features a museum and contains 15 million documents, two million books and 4,000 Artifacts, some of which feature essential events in the Nigerian history and modern African history.
The OOPL is definitely a place to be!
