Grow Africa Analytics: Is Nigeria Ready To Ban Corn Importation?

The economic landscape in Nigeria constitutes massive imports, even in industries where local businesses are producing ample, healthier products. The Maize Association of Nigeria in 2018 requested the Nigerian Government to completely ban corn importation Nationwide. This was proclaimed through the president of the association, Bello Abubakar, in an appeal to grow the market locally. Bello Abubakar in his appeal, said “Our last year’s production was 15 million tonnes and this year, we produced 20 million tonnes of maize and the required quantity for all maize processors in Nigeria is about 8 million tonnes.”

As the world progresses with globalization we continue to support fair trade and thus reject an immediate complete ban. Nonetheless, we support certain limitations on importation and legislation to improve local output. Greater tariffs should be charged on imported maize to encourage local businesses to first consider using the lower-priced locally-grown maize instead of imported maize. A complete ban can destabilize perfectly working business processes.
