Has Lagos Continental, Formerly InterContinental Hotel, Shut Down Permanently Post COVID-19 Lockdown?

The Lagos Continental, Formerly Intercontinental Hotel Lagos, has raised concerns about its continuity following a communique released by management. It informed its guests that the hotel will be closed for refurbishment effective 31st July, 2020. The refurbishment was set to commence immediately, with the time of re-opening communicated on a later date.

This comes two years after the Intercontinental Hotel Group (IHG) threatened to exit Nigeria in 2018. The exit decision was considered after the company filed for a breach of contract against the now defunct Skye Bank. However, in 2019, 11 Plc formerly known as Mobil Oil acquired the hotel in a bid to increase its real estate portfolio.

Although the N90,000 per night hotel was saved from packing up shop last year, the proposed “extensive refurbishment” could be another exit strategy. With the owners of Oriental Hotel Lagos already on their way out of the Nigerian market, the country’s hospitality sector should be kept under close watch.
