The Mahtani family are the wealthy owners and directors of the Churchgate Group Nigeria, a large conglomerate with major operations in many sectors of the Nigerian economy, as well as its subsidiaries which include the Grand Hyatt hotel and residences in Lagos and the World Trade Centre in Abuja. The Mahtani family who reportedly became citizens of Nigeria by naturalization were once known as the Manshaudani family but changed their name in the 1980s after reportedly being deported back to India from Nigeria due to the charges brought against them in court by the Federal Government for alleged economic sabotage and exchange control malpractices for which they were eventually found guilty, expelled and ordered to be deported to India from Nigeria. However, the Mahtanis found their way back into the country in 2002 after changing their names and international passports, now all bearing the Mahtani name.
This family who established their wealth and status in Nigeria have been found notorious for flagrant violation of labour regulations, tax and levies dodging, racketeering and other fraudulent business activities revealed by sources familiar with them. The Mahtani siblings naturalized into Nigerian citizens and are famous for deploying cutthroat tactics, and allegedly defrauding Nigerian entrepreneurs seeking to do legitimate business through dubious means. Many allegations have been made against them in the past for impersonation, perjury, threat to life of competitors crucial parts of their business strategy which have led to their enormous wealth.
They were also well known for being the moneybag behind the campaign of the late former Zambian president Michael Sata which got their hooks into the country. The Mahtani’s alliance with the former Zambian president involved several corrupt practices of including embezzlement of government funds, and their subsequent financial inducements enabled them to exploit the country even more. The Mahtanis maybe notorious for their illicit dealings, but they have still somehow managed to evade the law till this day and continue to exploit the African countries within their grasp.
