The unfortunate occurrence of a Facebook auction child bride is bitterly common is poverty-ridden communities across Africa. An under-aged girl from South Sudan, said to be as young as 16 years old, was auctioned publicly on Facebook in November 2018 to men she had never met. The creator of the posting uploaded an image of the young girl and asked men to bid to have her hand in marriage. The highest bidder was accepted by the girl’s father and the young virgin bride was said to have gotten married in Juba, South Sudan. The highest bidder paid the girl’s family with 500 cows, three luxury cars and $10,000 cash. The young girl, name withheld, became the 11th wife of the highest bidder. A Facebook auction child bride is illegal but highly common in South Sudan. According to a press release from Facebook, “Any form of human trafficking whether posts, pages, ads or groups that co-ordinate this activity are not allowed on Facebook.” The legal age for marriage in South Sudan is 18 and thus auctioning a child bride on Facebook or anywhere is illegal in South Sudan. The economic downtown and high rate of extreme poverty in South Sudan is the leading cause of families giving away their young girls before legal age.
