Joyce Banda, former president of Malawi, left the country after facing allegations of abuse of office and money laundering, which she denied. A corruption scandal known as ‘Cashgate’ where senior government officials exhausted millions of dollars from state confers, was discovered in 2013, during her tenure as president. This resulted in donor countries cutting off aid, which hampered development in Malawi, a country known as one of the world’s poorest and aid dependent countries.
Ms Banda is said to return to Malawi on Saturday, as confirmed by People’s Party deputy spokesman, Ackson Kaliyile.
