It has been revealed in a new classified report by the U.S pentagon, that the four U.S troops who died in an ambush during an operation in Niger, in October 2017, was as a result of poor training, carelessness and a series of excessive risk factors. This tragic incident was also seen to have been caused by low-level commanders using shortcuts to approve operations. The operation began on the 3rd of October, 2017 when Green Berets led twelve U.S soldiers who joined forces with Nigerian troops on a routine patrol near Mali, in the southwest region of the country. In addition to the four soldiers that were killed, five Nigerian soldiers were also killed and two U.S soldiers wounded in the attack.
The report also includes prevention measures such as the reinforcement of protocol within the chain of command and however, holds no one responsible for the incident in Niger, but acknowledges that mistakes where made on several levels and firmly calls on the Army and Special Operations Command to take charge of the issues to combat the re-occurrence of such incidents.
