The Nigeria Labour Congress is an Umbrella body for trade unions in Nigeria. It was inaugurated 1978 following a merge of four different Organisations: Nigeria Trade Union Congress (NTUC), Labour Unity Front (LUF), United Labour Congress (ULC) and Nigeria Workers Council (WAC).
The organised labour(NLC) held a meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, in Abuja on Wednesday, which did not produce the expected outcome. The labour leaders had on September 12, issued a 14-days ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria on the subject matter of increasing the minimum wage from N18,000 to at least N65,000 or nothing less than N50,000. Nigeria’s minimum wage was last changed in 1-Jan-2011.
The NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, said the industrial strike would commence today (27th September, 2018) due to the nonacceptance of the Federal Government to reassemble the meeting of the tripartite national minimum wage committee to enable it to conclude its work.
He said, “In compliance with this mandate, all workers and private sector at all levels across the country have been directed to comply, which has not being complied to, because work activities are still very much on.
“All public and private institutions, offices, banks, schools, public and private business premises, including filling station, are to remain shut till further notice,” Wabba said at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday.
The previous minimum wage of N18,000 cannot adequately feed, clothe and provide shelter for an adult in today’s Nigeria and should be adjusted upwards. Considering the fact that the value of Naira keep decreasing in terms of currency, which in return reduces the purchasing power of that value.
