Top 3 Reasons Why National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Must End NOW | Grow Nigeria

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program is one of Nigeria’s longest standing programs for graduates. NYSC is a mandatory one month of on-campus activities at an assigned NYSC camp base anywhere across the nation, plus 10 months of dedicated, supervised, low-wage work with an assigned institution. NYSC has been institutionalized in Nigeria over several decades and currently mandatory for all citizens to gain employment in the country – including citizens who graduated in the diaspora. The program had some potentials but today, it has almost completely lost majority of its usefulness. Top 3 reasons why Nigerian Government must end NYSC now:End NYSC

End NYSC

  1. It brings about significant amounts of suffering and in some cases, death. A program that institutionalizes the potentials of a mandatory death sentence should never be continued. Very recently, young NYSC campers were kidnapped en route their assigned camp destination far away from the state they were born in and lived in. There have been reported cases of torture, financial mishaps and emotional damages ongoing through the course of registering for NYSC and completing the program.
  2. The program is extremely disorganized and has witnessed little growth to date. Graduates queue in the hot sun for long hours, spend lots of money going back and forth trying to get a posting letter. A mandatory program like NYSC should be simplified and should focus on the learnings and growth potentials for the graduates. There should be little to know stress emerging from the course of completing a program citizens did not freely sign up for but have been mandated to complete.
  3. Majority of the nation’s leaders did not complete the NYSC program and majority of their children to not complete the program ethically. Most secure NYSC certificates through bribery and other means. Why then should the masses be the ones to undergo such torturous conditions? (Read: The Kemi Adeosun Fake NYSC Certificate Saga).

We highly recommend NYSC must not be continued in its current highly unacceptable conditions; except it can be revamped with new leadership and adequate financial allowances to be revamped to maximize its high potentials.
