Top 3 Reasons Why You Should Not Trust Content on Wikipedia

Wikipedia provides internet users with millions of articles on a wide range of topics and commonly ranks first in search engine. However, its credibility and reliability fall short of its standard for being school paper. According to Wikipedia itself ‘while some of the articles are of the highest quality of scholarship, others are complete rubbish.’

Here are some disadvantages of Wikipedia which forms the basis on why you should not trust contents on it:

  • Anyone can create, edit or delete Wikipedia articles. Some of the articles are vandalized whether for fun, as a hoax or because the subject is controversial. Subjects that happen to be in the news or politically and culturally topics are vulnerable to these issues.
  • Wikipedia articles cannot be scholarly because we know nothing about the contributors. This is because Wikipedia is a volunteer-run project. It cannot monitor every contribution all the time. There are many errors that remain unnoticed for as long as 5 years or a decade.
  • The intended audience can vary. Some articles are written from a insider’s view, with highly technical language, while some are written for a more general audience. This can be both frustrating and valuable depending on what one is looking for, and either way is a warning sign that the information can be inconsistent.
