Uganda: The Tropical Fruit Basket Of Africa

Tourists from far and wide gracing the lands of Uganda have continually been complimenting the rich soils and fruit-friendly lands as their experiences on healthy living was top-notch through out their tour on the land.


Uganda is truly the Fruit Basket of Africa, over 50 varieties of Bananas, Pineapple –that is simply the Best, Passion Fruit, Mangoes, Watermelons, Jackfruit, Papayas, Citrus Fruits, Star Fruit, Avocados and even Apples – Uganda is Africa’s Fruit Basket. Uganda is also home to the best avocados found in the entire universe. This is a major sector where their economy thrives as most of the population are into fruit farming.

Uganda has pleasant climate, fertile grounds and plentiful rain useful for the rapid growth of fruits and vegetables. There is a major concentration on Bananas as Uganda grows much more of it than any country in Africa. They are called “Africa’s Banana Republic”.

Uganda Africa’s Banana Republic and that is a compliment since Uganda grows more Bananas in Africa than any other nation. Bananas are a basic food item for many Ugandan and locally it is called Matooke – plantain type Banana. Eating Bananas – there are the small and sweet ones called Menvu here and the larger ones as you would find in the West are called Ndiizi.

Eating Bananas are found everywhere and are eaten any time of the day as a fruit snack. They are also used in making Ugandan pancakes called Kabalagala. For a special treat there are the sweet cooking bananas called Gonja that are often roasted over charcoal and sold by vendors in town – some people fry them coating the Gonja Bananas with a batter. The resulting taste of this mix is heavenly.

This is cultural heritage as foreigners journey from far just to have a taste of Africa’s fruits as our soils enable its healthy growth.
