On Sunday, March 10th, 2018, it was announced that an Ethiopian Airplane carrying over 150 passengers, crashed en route Nairobi, Kenya. The plane was a Boeing 737 Max purchased only a year prior. Passengers on the plane were very diverse and included nationalities such as Kenya, Canada, Germany, Egypt, Great Britain, Ethiopia, USA, Netherlands, France, Slovakia, China and Italy. A truly global flight, passengers composed 35 nationalities. Ethiopian Airlines has been known as one of Africa’s Best for over a decade. What went wrong?
According to the Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, Tewolde GebreMariam, the plane lost contact with the airport within only 6 minutes of taking off from base. Prior to losing contact, the CEO indicated that the pilot had reported technical difficulties and asked for clearance to return to Addis Ababa. Investigations into the crash or emergency landing are ongoing in Ethiopia. Certain media analysts are speculating the fault as a manufacturer issue and not that of Ethiopian airlines considering the plane was brand new and the pilot was an expert who had flown over 8,000 hours. The Ethiopian Airlines Crash 2019 is very unfortunate and the eventual cause must be thoroughly investigated.
