What Went Wrong With Saudi Arabia’s 2018 Future Investment Initiative Economic Forum

The first edition of Saudi Arabia’s Future Investment Initiative (FII) Economic was grand in 2017. The Future Investment Initiative is owned by the Government of Saudi Arabia and funded through the Public Investments Fund. With over 5,000 leaders in attendance from all over the world, FII Edition One was a major success. The 2nd Edition of Future Investment Inivitative, held in November 2018 but was fraught with 2 major mishaps. In as much as FII organizers expected continuous growth and a bigger success from the first edition, FII 2018 was less of a success in comparison to FII 2017. The following are the biggest contributing factors to why FII 2 was not as successful as FII 1:

  1. Khashoggi Killing. The assasination of the journalist was allegedly ordered by the Saudi Crown Prince and thus many leaders and scheduled speakers from around the world publicly and privately declined to attend the foremost Saudi Arabian leadership event.
  2. The Future Investment Initiate Economic Forum website was attacked by hackers a few days to the grand event.
