Where Are The Places Tagged ‘Hunger Hotspots’ In The World?

The United Nations has raised a warning sign concerning the increasing rate of global hunger and the need for urgent action to ward off famine and death in about 2 dozen unstable and violence prone countries.

According to a report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Program (WFP), more than a half-million people are experiencing catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity, while 41 million people are at risk of famine.

The 23 hotspots identified are in Africa, Asia, South America and the Middle East.

  • Central Africa Republic.
  • Central Sahel.
  • Chad.
  • DR Congo.
  • Kenya.
  • Liberia.
  • Madagascar.
  • Mozambique.
  • Nigeria.
  • Sierra Leone.
  • Somalia.
  • South Sudan.

Asia

  • Carribean – Haiti.
  • Myanmar.

Middle East

  • Afghanistan.
  • Lebanon.
  • Syrian Arab Republic.
  • Yemen.

South America

  • Colombia.
  • El Salvador.
  • Guatemala.
  • Honduras.

Global Report on Food Crises reported that 155 million people in 55 countries faced acute food insecurity at crisis or worse levels in 2020. Also, the report highlights that conflict, climate extremes, and economic shocks, often related to the economic fallout of Covid-19, are likely to remain primary drivers of acute food insecurity for the August-November period in 2021.
