Who is Alhaji Yusuf Gawuna?

Yusuf Gawuna is the former Commissioner for Agriculture and newly elected Deputy Governor of Kano State effective 18th September 2018 following the resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Hafiz Abubakar in August 2018 as a result of what he termed “irreconcilable differences” between him and the Governor of Kano State, Umar Ganduje.

According to the Kano State Minister for Information, Muhammad Garba, Mr Abubakar resigned having realised that 30 out of the 40 members of the Kano State House of Assembly have signed to commence his removal. The deputy governor was to be removed for his allegedly false and unfounded allegations as well as undermining the state government. He was also accused of forsaking the Ganduje administration, swearing allegiance to his political Godfather, Rabiu Kwankwaso and making unguarded comments capable of causing disaffection particularly in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the state in general.

It is also rumoured that Abubakar has left the APC to PDP in order to contest in the forthcoming 2019 elections with Rabiu Kwankwaso.

After Abubakar’s resignation, a lot of people showed interest in the Deputy Governor position but Yusuf Gawuna’s name was forwarded to the Senate by Ganduje for consideration and after proper deliberations, Gawuna was appointed as the Deputy Governor of Kano State on Tuesday, 18th September 2018.
