As Mexico’s richest man, Carlos Slim Helu and his family control America Movil, Latin America’s biggest mobile telecom firm. With foreign telecom partners, Slim bought a stake in Telmex, Mexico’s only phone company, in 1990. Telmex is now part of America Movil. He also owns stakes in Mexican construction, consumer goods, mining and real estate companies and 17% of The New York Times.
Carlos is an early 20th century style American capitalist who believes in monopoly, old factory system and economies of scale more than innovation and technology. Also known as the Warren Buffett of Mexico, Carlos Slim Helú shot to fame when he became the richest man of the world in 2010-2013. Carlos always knew he wanted to be a businessman and began to develop his business and investment acumen at a young age. Despite being a multi billionaire, this 79 years old man lives in a modest six-bedroom house, a mile away from his office.
