Daniel Pondei was made acting Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Corporation (NDDC) in February 2020 by President Muhammadu Buhari, after the ousting of former MD Joy Nunieh due to heavy corruption allegations. Prior to his appointment, Pondei was a full-time Professor of Medicine at the Niger Delta University and a former Provost of the College of Health Sciences. He was appointed along with 4 other people to manage the forensic financial audit of the NDDC. During the early days of their tenure, the committee, prior to Pondei’s appointment, indicated that they uncovered fraudulent contracts exceeding a trillion Naira.
Within only a few months of his new acting role at NDDC, Pondei is facing the National Assembly due to corruption charges. Daniel Kemebradikumo Pondei and team at NDDC are currently facing the national assembly due to corruption allegations in excess of over 80 Billion Naira. Pondei indicated that under his leadership, he authorized over a billion naira to be spent on protecting the management and staff from the effects of COVID-19; amongst other justifications. On the 20th of July, 2020, Pondei slumped and fainted while being interrogated by the Senate committee regarding his corruption allegations.
