Denis Sassou Nguesso is the president of the Republic of Congo first from 1979 to 1992 and then from 1997 to date. During his first tenure as president, Denis Nguesso led a single-party government for 12 years which prompted an international uprising pressuring him to introduce a multi-party system of government in the country. Since his first and second tenure in office as military head of state, he has been re-elected three more times as the democratically elected president in 2002, 2009 and 2016 with the support of several political parties.
Denis Nguesso’s achievements as the president of Congo include the successful negotiation of loans from the International Monetary Fund, and partnering with foreign investors from America and France for the operation of key oil and mineral exploration. In 2006, a controversy arose involving about 106,000 pounds of humanitarian aid granted by the British government to the Republic of Congo which was squandered by Denis Nguesso’s entourage and family members during the United Nation’s General Assembly meeting. Denis Nguesso’s son Denis Christel who was the head of the marketing branch of Congo’s state oil firm was alleged to have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of the country’s oil revenue on shopping sprees purchasing several designer items from the likes of Louis Vuitton and Roberto Cavalli.
