Who Is Ismaïl Omar Guelleh of Djibouti?

Ismail Omar Guelleh is the president of Djibouti since 1999 when he was chosen as the successor to his uncle Hassan Gouled Aptidon who became the president when the country attained its independence in 1977. Ismail Guelleh has remained president through a continuous re-election winning majority votes in 2005, 2011 and 2016. Although Ismail Guelleh has been characterized as a dictator and his administration criticized by certain human rights group, he has still managed to remain the country’s head of state to date, despite his initial plans to retire after his first presidential tenure in 1999.
