Who Is Jonah Jang? And How Did He Get To Sleep In The Same Prison Bed As Olusegun Obasanjo?

Air Commodore Jonah David Jang is a Nigerian politician who was the Governor of Plateau State from 2007 to 2015, currently serving as a Senator in the Nigerian Senate. He previously served as Military Governor of Benue State from August 1985 to August 1986, then as Military Governor of former Gongola State from August 1986 to December 1987 under the Military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.

Jonah Jang was remanded in prison early this year, over a 12-count charge of alleged corruption and misappropriation of N6.3 billion during his tenure as Governor. He was specifically alleged to have stolen N2billion released by the CBN for distribution to small and medium scale enterprises in the state under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Funds (MSMED) close to the expiration of his tenure in April 2015. The former governor was also said to have abused the office as Governor by collecting money amounting to N4.3billion from the state repository through the cashier of the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Yusuf Gyang Pam. While being remanded in a prison in Jos he stated; “For me being in prison is a great lesson in humility,” “When I was at the EFCC office in Abuja, I slept on the floor, but here in the prison I have the privilege of sleeping in the same bed that former President Olusegun Obasanjo slept in at the Jos prison.” This is how the former Plateau state Governor got to sleep in the same prison bed with 2 time former president Olusegun Obasanjo.
