Mohammed Fawehinmi, born February 1969, is a Nigerian lawyer, activist and the eldest son of late legal luminary, Gani Fawehinmi.
Mohammed passed away on 11th August, 2021 at the age of 52, when he complained of breathing difficulty and was rushed to a hospital, where he died.
The Nigerian activist had his primary education at Kotun Memorial Primary School and his secondary education at Federal Government College, Sokoto. Mohammed holds a Bachelors degree in Business Administration from University of Lagos in 1991, an LLB degree from the University of Buckingham and was called to Nigeria Bar in 1998.
Like his father, Gani Fawehinmi, Mohammed was a lawyer and human rights advocate. The National President of Centre for Human and Socioeconomic Rights, Alex Omotehnise says “when some of us see him, we believe Gani is still alive, because he was bold, spoke like his father, was courageous and never looked at his challenges.”
Also, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu said he was passionate in the fight for the rights of the Nigeria people just like his father. He added that the late Mohammed did not live under the shadows of his father as he had grown to become a dependable comrade.
Furthermore, he said, “as a civil rights activist, he spent his life in the service of humanity and particularly for the emancipation of the Nigerian people. Mohammed Fawehinmi was as consistent as his father, the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi. He kept the flame of his father burning by fighting for the masses even on his wheelchair.”
In 2003, Mohammed had an accident in Lagos, which affected his spinal cord and confined him to a wheelchair. Although he managed the law firm of his father, he was unable to practise law the way his father had hoped. Mohammed was unmarried before his death.
With over 20 years of experience in the practice of law, Mohammed Fawehinmi was the Head of Mohammed Fawehinmi’s Chambers, Director, Nigeria Law Publications Limited, Director, Books Industries Nigeria Limited and Director, Gani Fawehinmi Library and Gallery Limited.
