A Nigerian-born Canadian professor, writer, literary critic, satirist, and columnist, Pius Adesanmi, was born in Kogi State, Nigeria. Adesanmi had a BA from the University of Ilorin in 1992, a masters in French from the University of Ibadan in 1998, and a Ph.D. in French studies from the University of British Columbia in 2002. Adesanmi was also a prominent columnist for Premium Times and Sahara Reporters.

In September 2015, his scathing column on the decision of the Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, to take an underage wife generated substantial conversation on the matter and even got the response of the Emir. In 2015, he gave a TED TALK titled “Africa is the forward that the world needs to face”. He was a member of the Advisory Board of the Ake Arts & Book Festival.
Unfortunately, Pius Adesanmi was among the 157 passengers and crew members that died in a plane crash on Sunday 10, 2019. The Ethiopian Airlines Airbus 737 Max 8 crashed on Sunday morning shortly after leaving Addis Ababa for Nairobi in Kenya. He was en route Nairobi as a participant at the ECOSOCC Meeting organised by the African Union.
RIP PIUS ADESANMI
