Why The Nigerian Federal High Court Gave An Order Mandating Former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu’s Return To The Country Within Seven Days

Former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu was recently charged with a N7.65 billion fraud allegation by the EFCC alongside his former Commissioner for Finance, Ude Udeogo, and a company known as Slok Nigeria Limited, particularly on an amended 39-count charge of money laundering all amounting to the said N7.6bn. The former Governor who is the Chairman of the Slok Holding company as well as the Daily Sun and Telegraph Nigerian Newspapers, served as the Governor of Abia state from 1999 to 2007 from which he was alleged to have embezzled millions of naira of funds belonging to the state.

Mr. Kalu alongside his accomplices was alleged to have committed the offence between August 2001 and September 2006 when he used his company, Slok Nigeria Ltd, to retain N200 million in an account in First Inland Bank, now known as First City Monument Bank. The money laundered was said to be part of funds illegally derived from the treasury of the Abia State Government for which he is now under trial.

However, the former governor who is currently away in Germany for an undisclosed ailment resulting to an emergency surgery, forcing the court to adjourn his trial indefinitely was said to have deliberately absconded in order to stall the court proceedings which has indeed angered the court. He was also accused by the EFCC to use this means to jump bail and evade the law and has now prompted the court to make a public order for his return within the next seven days or face the wrath of the court. Orji Uzor Kalu has been one of the most controversial political figures in Nigeria, hence, this current situation involving him comes as no surprise to many.
