Why Would School Children Be Exposed To Intentional Food Poisoning?

Educational operations were called to a halt at Nyabururu High School in Kisii County, Nairobi Kenya on Sunday 17th March 2019 after parents flocked the institution to check on the condition of their children following reports on food poisoning.

The parents accused the school of intentional food poisoning and they were deranged by the fact that the school management had been turning on deaf ears to the constant complaints of their wards. Despite the attempt made to silence them, the parents still insisted on seeing their wards.

The school management apologized and promised to proffer solutions to the issues but this was evidently due to the fact that these parents promised to take up legal action on them. Mr Ng’oma said, “We are sorry about what might have happened but were are urging you to give us more time to handle the matter,” also adding that the school would be closed if the situation worsens. And this last statement clearly shows where their priorities lie as a number of students raised concerns that they had been denied a chance to speak to their parents and were forced to attend classes despite the pain they were experiencing.

A source who requested anonymity, attributed the food poisoning cases to the consumption of cabbages which were brought in two lorries last week. These cabbages were found disposed behind the school premises once the parents started arriving. This action clearly showed deliberate intentions. The cabbages were later buried at the school farm. The school administration denies the allegations.

“Let me request the media to be sensitive and fair on this issue. If there is a problem, there are relevant authorities to deal with it,” said the school’s principal Joyce Orioki.

However, the Kisii County government has promised to intervene in the matter.
