The World Happiness Report is a landmark survey of the state of global happiness. It ranks 156 countries by how happy their citizens perceive themselves to be. This year, it ranks cities around the world, instead of countries, by their subjective well-being. Furthermore, it seeks to probe deeply how the social, urban and natural environments combine to affect our happiness. It considers the speed and scale of urbanisation, with all its benefits and challenges. Thus, asking how do city dwellers fare when it comes to their subjective well-being? How did their well-being change over time? Which cities around the world promote a higher well-being amongst their inhabitants than others, conditional on the same development level? And how does well-being and inequality of well-being within cities relate to that within countries?
The report was published on the 20th of March, 2020. It is interesting to note that very few African cities are indexed on the report. With the highest rank being Algiers in Algeria at #93. It is followed by Niamey (NIger) at #100, Port-Louis (Mauritius) at #104, Tripoli and Benghazi (Libya) at #111 and #112 respectively. Further down is Johannesburg (South Africa) at #120, Mogadishu (Somalia) at #122, Freetown (Sierra Leone) #125, Accra (Ghana) at #129 among others. Juba (South Sudan) had the lowest ranking at #182 while there were no Nigerian cities on the list.
