Africa Faces Significant Energy Inequality With Most Communities Lacking Reliable Electricity Access

Over 600 million Africans still lack stable access to electricity, despite renewables comprising 55% of the continent’s power mix. South Africa, home to a third of Africa’s generation capacity, continues to grapple with blackouts, corruption, and infrastructure failures.

Bridging the gap will require connecting 90 million people annually and investing $64 billion per year. While solar projects are advancing, coal remains a necessity for base-load power; meanwhile nuclear plans raise geopolitical concerns, particularly with increasing Russian engagements. Addressing Africa’s energy gap demands a balanced, multi-tiered approach intertwining investment, innovation, and policy reform.
