Tanzania Gold Mining Revenues Mask Brutality Against Local Villagers

Tanzania gold mining, specifically Tanzania’s North Mara gold mine, has contributed an estimated $4.8 billion to the economy since 2019, with projections exceeding $1 billion this year alone. Yet the wealth is overshadowed by at least 96 reported killings and widespread abuses by police tasked with securing the mine, targeting desperate villagers.

Opposition leaders claim the revenues underwrite repressive state behavior ahead of upcoming elections. The crisis highlights how exploitation of natural resources can entrench inequality and human rights violations. Despite economic gains, the social and ethical cost continues to cast a dark shadow over extractive development.
