Olaudah Equiano, if alive, would be celebrating his 273rd birthday in 2018. The historic man, also known as Gustavus Vassa, was a writer who is known today as someone who helped abolish slave trade. He was born in 1745 in the Igbo village of Essaka in Eastern Nigeria and passed away in 1797, aged 52, in Middlesex UK. According to Equiano’s autobiography, he was kidnapped from Essaka at the age of 11 and sold to slave masters in the USA. His autobiography (The Interesting Narrative of the Life Of Olaudah Equiano), published a decade before is death, is known today as one of the works that contributed to the establishment of the Slave Trade Act Of 1801. The sordid depiction of the absolutely horrid conditions of slavely in Equiano’s autobiography led to the beginning of the end of slavery and contributed to decolonization. He was married to British Susannah Cullen with whom he had 2 children.
