It is usually acquired from infected rats and transmitted through faeces and urine of rats. It was discovered in 1969 in Nigeria. The virus is named after the town in Nigeria where the first cases occurred. Lassa fever occurs mainly in West Africa countries such as Nigeria, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Wednesday confirmed 37 new cases of Lassa fever recorded between February 4 and February 10. It has been confirmed that 20 states in Nigeria had recorded at least one confirmed case across 54 local government areas. Following the recent outbreak, Nigerians need to take preventive measures.
